BOATING ACCIDENT ON AREA LAKE INJURES ONE - 12/21/10
Two brothers that went to Gillham Lake Saturday learned a lesson in low water safety when the boat they were riding in flipped over after hitting a submerged object in the water.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:15 Saturday afternoon according to Howard County Sheriff Butch Morris. The brothers were identified as 25-year-old Trevor Durham of Conway and 21-year-old Jakeb Durham of Rolland. After hitting the submerged item both men were thrown from the boat. The prop of the motor struck Jakeb and due to the injuries, he was air lifted by Air Evac to a Texarkana hospital. The injuries were listed as non-life threatening.

Arkansas Game and Fish Wildlife Officer John Partain and Deputy Joey Davis of the Howard County Sheriff?s office are investigating the accident.

Something not quite right with this story. Those are clearly life threatening injuries!

very graphic injury, it skipped over his spine or he'd be wheeling around the rest of his life.
This probably belongs in the safety forum.

About 30 yrs ago a member of the N.E.Patriots was running a boat around WOT on a lake in the dark, hit the end of a broken pier, the outboard tore off and came in the boat, cut his leg off and he died, alcohol was suspected.

Looks like 11 slices, 3 blade prop? only 4 revolutions.
Only takes less than a wink of the eye.

My older brother was a life guard on White Bear Lake in the 50's, when beer was king and brains were parked. He showed me a bunch of pictures like that. Those are nicks compared to some I've seen. A box of staples and a tetanus shot and he'll be like new.

One would think they are, but there was no immediate life threat due to those injuries. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to downplay the severity of these injuries. They are not superficial. They are also not life-threatening. It's not only amazing that the prop blades missed his spinal cord, but they also didn't cut any major arteries or veins... Thus, no major bleeding. One wrong vein or artery, and this would have had a very different and sad outcome. It actually looks like no arteries or veins were cut, much less any major vessels. Without antibiotics, this man would be facing life threatening sepsis. He would be killed by various bacteria and virus. This may sound rediculous, but he's a very fortunate man.

I have often seen prop marks in the mud that look just like that; I vote "real."

I have been thinking about adding a lanyard kill switch for the 2 years I've had my boat. Really have to do it.
You can't un-ring that kind of bell.

I think it would be fair to say and more to the point that it was a life threatening accident

I only used mine in rougher seas but after seeing this which happened on a lake I'm gonna use it every time & even in the harbour.

Thanks for the post.

Excellent comment marcoalza, and to the point.
Really silly to start discussing the rights and wrong of whether or not the injuries were life threatening and how close to the spinal cord............for me, a prop that is turning is always too close to the spinal cord no matter what!

I'm thinking the same thing. The switches themselves seem to be a low cost item and a search for "kill switch" on the forum implies it's not rocket science to install one. Looks like installing a kill switch will be one of my spring projects.

Our new boat has the kill switch but the previous owner didn't supply the lanyard so what was my first purchase? Two new lanyards since I am a safety overkill type of personality.

I agree with you 100%. That certainly was a life threatening "accident". The man was very, very lucky. As easily as that prop danced across his back... It could just as easily been his neck or head.

Didn't mean to tickle your silly bone!!!... A member commented that "something's not quite right about this. Those injuries are clearly life threatening." I was simply pointing out the fact that such was not the case. There was nothing "fishy" going on... No pun intended. The point of this discussion is not to offend or split hairs or argue about samantics or the gravity of an injury or situation. It's a discussion... That's what a forum is all about. Some discussions will go in varying directions... it's all good. And on that note, I must say that I agree... "for me, a prop that is turning is always too close to the spinal cord no matter what!" See, we can all get along here, right?
OH, and by the way... All kidding aside... Welcome aboard!!! This is a great group of boaters.

Not to stir the pot, but why is a kill switch only on an outboard and not an I/O? As others mentioned, the prop blade is turning...regardless whether it's an I/O, OB or IB.

You can have a kill switch on pretty much any motor. Some oldies will not have it. I had to install mine on my outboard.

They are on I/O's... Just not useful on a larger cruiser... They do have wireless kill switches now that you carry on you and when they get wet (you fall overboard), it cuts the engine... Still, I will not use one. If you use common sense, you won't need to use it... IE. When I go to the bow or on the swimstep of my boat, I put the engine in neutral.
