Re: Guides Who Don't Produce

i guess it all boils down to how much is your time worth? spend a year searching for locations, fish, and techniques!!!! not to mention fuel, fuel, more fuel, and ware and tare on my boat. or use a guide which is (a quick esitemate)about 5 boat outings for myself. when i first went to lake okeechobee the first 3 or so trips i did not catch a thing stumped, burnt toast . and i wondered how the @#*% 10# bass were being caught out of this place. but with time and much dollars you learn the place. the lake is so big and vast you can not see land when out in the middle.manny places to fish most of them don't produce. a guide would have been appreaciated. but i'm hard headded, and egotistical.

I'd almost expect Musky to be one of the most difficult guide jobs around? Never fished for Musky, but, aren't they rather ellusive compared to other freshwater fishies?

Musky, the fish of 10,000 casts. Or maybe 100,000 casts in my case.

I understand feeling bad if you pay someone and get skunked. I think there is much more to a good guide than catching your limit. At least you learn his techniques and get his spots, all in one day.

Re: Guides Who Don't Produce

well Im finally back and I hope I can continue to contribute.
I guide 150 days a year and I would do nothing else regardless of lifes curves.

I take my clients out for the day I make sure i know the water Im going to fish I ask very very specific questions as to the type of fishing they are interested for example when chasing musky troll or cast etc...

I make sure I work my bunns off and yes I will in fact take some time to fish. I make sure that the client is comfortable and well taken care of. If we dont score and we have spent 7 of the 8 hrs out on the water. It simple I charge for the day.
I offer to stay as long as they want and of course is safe. I do charge my full fee regardless of hitting fish or not.

Now if it was a total loss day what I do is that I offer 1/2 off on the next booking, and pick up dinner.

Thank god Im good lmao and dont have to buy dinner a whole lot.

remember guys a guide as good as he or she can be will have costs attributed to the day such as fuel and bait No matter how hard I try I cant will a fish on.
Now with bad weather etc or a day cut short regardless of the reason I will refund the amount based on an equal hourly rate.

There is more to it then catching fish. Went with one guide and we caught more fish than I could count. He was a total ***. Ask him a question and he would tell us we did not pay for that information.

We did not catch any fish with the last guide we used. He did teach my son-in-law how to use a bait casting outfit. Explained everything that he was doing and everything he would have done if we had more time.

Going out with him next week. Oh yes we paid for a full day and got our moneys worth.

Re: Guides Who Don't Produce

I've only had a guide once here in the Twin Cities, to take out a new boss of mine for his first Northern. Didn't have much luck in the morning, and we were thinking we might get skunked all day. However, he had so much good information, was very helpful, and was willing to stay with us as long as we wanted. He also was making overtures to give us a discount or free trip. We kept telling him, no, we were having a great time. Ended up having to leave because of other plans, otherwise he would have taken us to a second lake as well. And, the fishing did pick up at the end - my boss caught his first Northerns and still tells everyone about it. I would hire him again even if we hadn't caught anything.

Re: Guides Who Don't Produce

Have only used quides a few times when we used to go up to Gunflint. Rotten weather, hard fishing but still fun. In talking to the guides the biggest thing was the willingness of the people hiring them to listen and to also help.
Too many times they get the know it all who will not listen. They can work their butts off but the client will not do the correct presentation. They also said the clients who thought they hired them so they don't have to do anyting were just as bad.
I remember the last time up we were only going to get 1 guide. Late in the year, Sept. and had snowed the night before, and we were taking two boats across Saganaga to Northern Lites lake. Another guide who worked there had nothing to do and decided to go with us just for something to do only because our orig. guide said we pulled our weight and listened.
Hard fishing, rainy and just all around sucked. Caught enough for shore lunch, built a fire, warmed up and ate fully. Went back out and saw a large Moose swiming across the lake, a few black bears and finally hit some nice Walleye's.
Back at the lodge that night we ate and went back to hit the sheets. After cleaning up there was a knock on the door and the two guides were there with some refreshments and good stories.
I guess the moral is treat the guide well, if you are willing to pay for a quide, listen to them and be nice.
Both guides got a good tip.
