OMC service bulletin stated that you should be a 1/4 to 1/2 inches forward of the two lines.

Mine hesitates if I run it between the two lines when I punch it, but if I run it about 3/8 of an inch ahead of that it's smooth when I push the throttle up.

I guess if yours is working fine I'd leave it alone.

It has the key triggered squirter. I might do your advice of advancing the timing at idle. What part resets the idle to be slightly advanced ?

cam/roller is set by adjusting the cam roller set screw to get it to open just past the 2 hash marks. the idle speed is adjusted port side there should be a medium sized flat head screw. loosen the nut and that will change idle speed screwing in or out. 2 different things of course. cam gets set 1st. there is no timing to be set its done in the water by setting idle speed. if the motor is healthy timing will be correct. if its not and the cylinders are damaged, you will find you need to increase idle speed too much just to get it to stay running.

They did use the older 20/25 Mids and Cases
yea accept the old style over hub exhaust gearcase. honestly those last longer anyway, just has lower thrust at slow speeds can be a pain keeping course into the wind but splitting hairs here:) check to be sure the cam roller comes away from the throttle cam and that the throttle cam moves all the way to port smoothly.
Over Hub Exhaust? I think you mean separate Exhaust Snout

The Retardation of the Spark Timing is what set the Idle Speed, there is no Spec, at it will vary depending on the Load the Engine is subject to. Which means a change in Prop Pitch will result in a different Idle Speed and an Adjusted will likely be needed.
OMC Engines in that HP Range were easy to set the Pickup Timing and it usually involved a Line/Mark on the Armature Plate Cam. That would be where the Roller would just contact the Cam. All Timing Advance will happen before the Carb opens Significantly, then the Carb opens very quick. Linkages have to be set up properly. I have seen far too many Engines where the Clueless have adjusted the Fuel Saver Linkage contact, thinking that is how the Idle Speed is set. That linkage is what opens the Carb fully after all the Timing is in

Just look up linc and sync for your motor....typically takes 2 or 3 times before I get it exactly the way I want it. Easy job? Not really, but gets easier every time I do it.

I don't use the carb pointer tool that the manufacturer says you need.

right. but that screw is what sets idle speed port side as described at least on later models. I think they did that change around 86' to make things much easier/finer control without disturbing the cam roller/throttle cam. agreed ive seen some quite messed up in regards to cam linkage!
