Re: Grounded Boat....HOW bad is it?
There is a pewter lining on this cloud. You live in an area where the boating season is coming to an end, anyway. That's about the best I can glean from this. With that said, if you plan on keeping the boat for a long time, get a new replacement lower from SEI. You can save up during the off-season for it, and be ready for next season. If you don't think you'll keep the boat for more than another season or two, do the craigslist thing as mentioned. Downside to CL, is you may be buying someone else's problem child. Most sterndrives for sale on CL are not attached to a boat, so there is no way to know if it's any good until you take it apart and/or put it on your boat. Could cost you more in the long run. That's a decision you and your wife need to discuss. With a new baby, boating may take the back burner for a couple of years.
Replace the prop with aluminum, or pick up a used SS on craigslist. No real need for the SS, but they are pretty. As said earlier, if it had been an AL on there, you probably wouldn't have as much of a headache.
Don't know if you have TowBoat or BoatUS, but they will probably send you an 'invoice' showing how much that tow would have cost you. Trust me, it will be a lot more than $400. In May, my boat stalled about 30 ft. from my dock after I dropped the wife off, and I was going to spin around and put it on the lift. Starter went out at the same time. Drifted about 200 ft from my dock, and had to call BoatUS for a tow (it was about 1am, so I didn't want to ask the neighbors for a hand). Got my invoice, and it was $350 or so. Never cancel that insurance as long as you have a boat.
