I have a 1978 115 hp Evinrude outboard and just had the water pump replaced along with the seals. I have not had any problems with shifting and/or grinding into forward gear prior to the water pump being installed. I took the boat out today, and when I shift into forward, I get the grinding noise and the boat won't shift/engage. Reverse works just fine. I have always looked to iboats forum for all my issues and have always found what I needed. I am looking for some advice and suggestions on what to do or look at.

Sounds like the shift linkage is out of adjustment. If you paid to have the pump replaced I would take it back and have them make it right.

Thanks for the reply. I replaced the water pump and seals. I also checked the lower unit drain plugs for metal shavings and found the top plug to have some. Would you expect to see some shavings? I would think so.

What are the rpm's reading? Mine did the same thing and if the rpm is to high all you will get is a grinding when trying to put into gear. It acts like a safety mechanism so you don't slam it into gear at high rpm's.

I would expect to see metal shavings on the lower screw. Did you change the adjustment on the shift shaft, it's easy to move the shaft when you have it apart?
