YES, the engine does turn over fine with no grinding noise when the coil is disconnected. Pics of the flywheel, and starter drive gear to follow...

Some of the teeth in your pics look like they have sharp edge on the front half of the teeth. Some also look short like the starter drive has worn the top of the teeth down some. I pointed some out in the pic below and there may be others I can't see. I'll also say I have seen worse. The pics are kind of hard to see but I think you should probably replace the starter ring gear before installing another new starter.

I've been pretending, hoping, praying and denying that its not a ring gear issue. But it sounds like it needs to be replaced:( I am VERY concerned that the condition that caused the damage to the gear is still present. Do you have any advice on how I should proceed, special tools I will need etc.. I do have access to most shop tools including a cherry picker, and a manual, but none specific to a marine application.

Ok here's an update: My new REAL mechanic believes that after a visual inspection, the ring gear is ok. With a new starter installed and the coil disconnected it turns over just fine again and again. As soon as he gets the distributor adapter plug to time it correctly, we hope to be back on the water. An update will follow...:D

Re: Grinding starter, volvo 4.3l

Here is my latest update, and hopefully the last on this problem! My mechanic timed the engine using the special order shunt, as directed by the service manual, and that was IT!!! No more grinding and it seems the problem has been solved!! The frustrating thing about this is that no one at any of the boat shops that I talked to knew any thing about the correct way to do the timing. Just by chance, my mechanic had delt with the same problem on a truck he had. I am convinced that this (and my hunch it was timing) saved me hundreds of dollars. Had I let the "pros" at the local boat shops do it, they wanted to change the ring gear, and I would still have the problem. Thanks to all who responded to this thread, it was a big help!!
