Hello,
Up at Raystown last weekend, I was was coming in to dock and needed reverse to slow down, it grinded. I attempted to try it again and it went in to reverse gear. This happend one other time. Going from neutral to reverse, no problem, Going from forward to reverse, grind. Any ideas?

Re: Grinding reverse

Hi Tom,

My guess is the prop is still spinning too fast in the forward direction for the dog clutch gears to be able to mesh. When you stop first in neutral it gives the prop time to stop. Whilst there may be an adjustment problem or damaged teeth on the clutch, if this is the only time it happens your probably OK.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will comment.

I have been enjoying you other posts.

This is a great site!

Yeah, don't go from forward to reverse.

Everything is still spinning forward and you are trying to make the gears mesh and spin the opposite direction.
You must let them stop spinning before engaging the gears and spinning them the opposite direction.

So, next time plan ahead and slow down sooner, put it in neutral and let the gearcase slow down, then hit reverse.

Re: Grinding reverse

Would you shift your car like that? NO! You always stop the car before shifting into reverse--at least if you follow the manual. Never approach a dock at a speed faster than you want to hit it at.

Use patience when docking. If you come in slowly and control your speed by shifting in and out of forward gear at idle, you will most times only need reverse if there is wind pushing you.

Re: Grinding reverse

Shifting too fast will do that. Also the shifter might need adjusting. The cable wearing out.The linkage at the motor too loose/out of adjustment.
There should be very little play in the cable.
Tighten up the connections and shift slowly.J

Re: Grinding reverse

You shouldn't go directly from forward to reverse, but even stopping in neutral sometimes it will grind if you don't go into reverse solidly.

The forward motion of the boat dragging the propeller through the water can make the propeller spin, which will cause grinding if you go very slowly into reverse. You should make a nice strong push into either gear when putting the boat in gear.

Re: Grinding reverse

I've gone from reverse to forward on a hill a few times in my old IROC. Had fun burning the tires up but ofcourse that's not good with anything.
