I need to know if there is a substitute for this control box its so fussy and screw holes are stripped and its annoying to install with all the upholstery having to go around it.

Well-----I think it is the gear shift cable / linkages on the motor that need adjusting.-------So disconnect shift cable at the motor.-----Operate the control box as a test.----Does it still make the noise ??

You said it yourself" when I shift fast it doesn't grind"
Your not supposed to "ease" it into gear.
Smooth even pressure, quickly push the handle into gear.
Slow will make the grinding noise.
Then if it still grinds? you need to adjust the linkage.

If the screw holes are stripped? then you need a different shifter.
There's a shifter on ebay, but it doesn't have the T@T switch in the handle.
Or buy a new one with the switch.
Before 87(?) they didn't have the switch in the handle it was on the dash.

Step #1 is to determine why you get this noise.----Be a shame to invest in a control box that might not fix the issue !!

SAFETY !!! test the shift at the motor, unhook the connector for the shift at the motor, maybe remove the prop, start the motor, then shift by hand, SAFETY stay away from the prop.
Shift into gear quickly, sloowly will make it grind.
IF? it still grinds? then the linkage needs adjusting.
Shifter: are the shift arms loose or wobble? Does the handle move side to side or back and forth with very little pressure?
Cables, unhook and lay straight, then pull and push, it should move with very little resistance. Bad cable can make it shift hard and make it grind.
