Ok, think I have it sorted. It was the first time in the water for the season and the prop shaft bushing was apparently dry and that was what was causing the noise. Still want to pull everything apart this next off-season and make sure it's good and not overly worn but so far it just makes the usual louder-than-forward noise due to the gearbox teeth and not the loud grind/squeal when the bushing is dry.
