If the shift cable/linkage is sticky it will have the same effect as shifting slowly.
It is like I'm shifting slowly, the more I think about it. I think you may be on to something.

Even when shifting on land on the water hose with dog clutch shifting you’ll hear a clank but shouldn’t be a grind. Grinding suggests shifting too slow, shift linkage mis adjusted, shift cable sticky or dog clutch/gear is too rounded off to engage fully & stay engaged. The shift cables must be in good condition & have equal stroke or throw on both sides of neutral for Fwd & rev gears.

A stainless prop might rattle when shifting on land.-----I suggest you visit your local friendly shop for advice.----If something is wrong it can lead to expensive repairs.

With the prop off, the only shift load is the propshaft. You will hear a short clunk or loud click when shifting if the gearcase is good. RPM would not matter much for that test. Of course with the mass of the prop, the noise will increase as RPM rises.

A video with sound might help. BTW a 1976 and 1977 1150 are identical, within the serial number groups.

Where are you located?

Don't shift into reverse without the motor running or; turning the prop while someone shifts. Other things that could be causing the noise: prop is missing Fwd thrust washer causing it to grind on gearcase, carrier nut at front of unit has moved out causing too much play in gears, shift cam or follower is worn. These gears a pretty tough and they take abuse well.

This gives me some things to look into. I feel like this shift cable being sticky is a likely culprit, otherwise it could be related to the dog clutch. I'm doing some other work on the boat but thanks for all the advice. I'll follow up in the future.
