Someone help me, I have a 1996 40 horse Evinrude outboard motor. I tried starting it up this year and had electrical problems (Fixed that problem ). But now I have a fuel? Problem. In order for me to start the boat I have to full throttle it to get it started but when I throttle down it stalls. And while it's throttled up it's smoking like a sieve. I have cleaned both carburetors thoroughly replaced fuel lines and fuel filter. HELLLLP!!!!

How did it run for you last season ?-----Are you pushing the key in WHILE cranking to start it ?----You should only have to advance throttle a bit.------Are both carburetors CLOSED in the idle position ?-----Do they both open at the same time ?----Are the high speed jets in the very bottom of the float bowls clean ?---They are way inside behind the drain plug.-----Did you leave fuel in the carburetors during storage.?

Check the throttle rollers. Make sure it is in one piece.

It ran good last season, it did sit for quite a few months not started. I did have to only advance throttle a little before this happened, now I have to practically full advance throttle to get it started and keep it running. How ever I didn't check or look at the high speed jets. I did soak it in parts cleaner and spray it all down with carb cleaner and rebuilt it. Could it be that?

Yes I do. This weekend I will be checking the timing. And I think the gas air mix is wrong so I'll be checking that too.

Ok update, Been busy with life this is slow going and I'm dying to get out on boat. Fixed the smoking like a seive problem. And now it doesn't shake while running. IT JUST WONT IDLE. As soon as I throttle down to let it idle it dies.
