I have a 20' Hurricane Fun Deck with a 4.3 liter and a Yamaha outdrive.

I bought the boat over the winter. Had it out like everyone else over the weekend and things could not have gone better..............right up until I started having acceleration issues.

I was cruising with the tack reading 4300 RPMs and all of a sudden the RPMs dropped to 3300. I shut her down, check the boat over and couldn't find a reason so I took off again. This time it went right back up to 4300 RPMs for a short distance and dropped down again. Now when I take off, the RPMs sit right at 3300 while the boat is trying to plain out. After several minutes it gets on plain but the engine kind of acts like it wants to jump up in RPMs but doesn't.

I've checked all wiring and can't find a short. Took the arrestor off and there appears to be plenty of gas getting to the carb. The engine revs up just fine when in neutral. It'll rev as high as I want it to go.

Any suggestions????? I'm at a loss:)

Ayuh,... I agree with Don, sounds like ya got a Fuel Delivery issue....

I'm postin' this just as a Fyi, or Heads Up,...
Please don't take it the wrong way...

The Wisest thing you can do is fix the issue at hand,...
And,...
SELL it...

Yamaha I/Os are totally Unsupported in North America...
You Can't buy new parts for 'em...
It's a Major Problem for you just down the stream somewhere....

Get Out from under it, ASAP...

Find yerself a nice boat with Mercruiser, or Volvo power my friend....

Good deal. Great thread and I really appreciate it. I'll check it out tomorrow or Thursday and let you know how I do.

I do have a question about the Yamaha outdrive. Is it really that bad? I've never owned a Yamaha outdrive and don't want a bunch of problems but............I really like the boat.

Would you all mind sharing your thoughts?

Thanks

Ayuh,... They were only imported for a year or two, then due to lawsuits, they left the northamerican market...
No more Yamaha drives, 'n absolutely NO parts support...

This tells you NOTHING except that it will rev up in neutral. You could also damage the engine.

The link that Don posted should get you going if you follow it to conclusion......(the engine is not Yamaha)

My suggestion is to fix the fuel flow problem and either remove the Yamaha specific "stuff" and replace it with a Mercruiser gimbal, drive and accessories or do what Bondo suggested, SELL IT. (of course, it won't be long before the buyer is here asking about parts availability!!)

A parted out Yamaha stern drive has value because there's a few people out there than cannot find parts. That makes the drive and other parts worth something.

Good luck...... unfortunately, you'll need it....:(

Ayuh,... Great,...
Now Sell it, 'n buy a Mercruiser or Volvo before that Yamaha blows up on ya...

It's worth something to somebody runnin'...
once it ain't, it's valueless...
