Hello with camping season right around the corner. and I know a lot of you have good advice.
I was wanting to get some more tips.
here is a few
1 if you take two ropes twist together tie to tree just spread the rope apart and place towel in between the ropes no need for clothes pins
2. In cold weather sleep with more blankets under you than you have on top.
3. for dirty dish water take a coffee can punch holes in bottom and take a old pair of pantie hose secure around coffee can drain dish water into the hose and away from camp or trail. the mess will be left inside the hose but the strained water can be used to water a plant just use a safe dish soap.
thank you for more tips I will also add some more
Serenity

Get one of these:

Excellent steaks, burgers, etc. Easy to raise/lower to control temperature.
I've used ours for cooking sausage for breakfast. I take a sheet of foil, make some holes in it, set it on the tripod grill, and place the sausages on the foil. The foil keeps the sausage from falling between the grates, and the holes let the smoke flavor the sausages a bit.

Also, we slice potatos and wrap the potatos in foil, with pads of butter and sprinkled with french onion (dry) soup mix. Cook 'em over the fire for about 45min ~ 1hour. Very tasty :D .

Here's a great camping recipe I got from Pointer94 right here on iboats. They're so good, I make 'em at home on the grill too.

If you like french onion soup, you have got to try this.

1 medium vidalia (yellow) onion
peel onion
use apple corer and core the onion as you would an apple
place onion on a piece of tinfoil large enough to completely wrap the onion cored end up
place a small amount of butter in the bottom of the core hole
next add 1 beef boulion cube
use a garlic press and put 1 clove garlic into core hole
fill remaining room in core with butter
carefully wrap the foil around the onion, leaving the top open slightly
be careful not to puncture the tinfoil when wrapping the onion
put 2-3 tablespoons of cooking sherry or chardonay in the foil (I prefer the chard by far)
finish wrapping it up
cook over medium heat for about an hour

They are delicious!!!

Re: Great camping/outdoor tips

serenity that #1 tip of yours alone is worth all the time I've spent on the forum - that one will be implemented this spring. Thanks!

The coleman fuel spring-loaded valve pour spout - well worth the price - highly recommended.

The campstove toasters - a flat piece of perforated metal with wire stands on top - work great - cheap - highly recommended.

Those plastic egg-cartons they sell in the camping dept - won't hold large, let alone extra-large - and don't really prevent breakage anyway - not recommended.

Shock-corded tripod lantern stand - flimsy - falls down at the slightest touch - not recommended.

For eggs I take a rubbermaid bottle on with a big opening and a pour spout and crack the eggs at home in it when I need just a couple of eggs just pour them out if scrambled I just add the seasone and shake. No broken eggs in cooler and takes up much less of room
serenity

Now that's a good tip mikeandronda. I'm not buying those pressed wax firestarters anymore. Now I'll start saving the dryer lint. And buying dollar store candles. ;) Thanks!

If you know where you're camping, a shephard's hook makes a great lantern holder. Don't need a tree.

Also, if there's no showers available, the portable bag type showers work well if the weather cooperates and it's sunny.

Two comments first:

Clothelines are illegal in Arizona campgrounds. In addition, tying ropes to trees can injure the tree (no I'm not an eco-wacko).

Don't let the water dump into one area (ie: end of hose), be sure to cast it out and scatter it.
Dumping dishwater close to camp (ie: end of hose) can attract bears and undesireable animals to your campsite.

************

Rub dishsoap on the outside of your pots/pans, and the black soot will wipe off.

If you need to scour a dutch oven, first turn it upside down on the fire and burn it out, then use salt as an abrasive if needed.

A lantern at ground level is worthless, get it up higher and the amount of usable light goes up greatly.

A big (6v) flashlight stood on end with a gallon jug of water balanced on top makes a great camplight. Not too bright, but plenty of light to eat and see what's what.

She will go and have a good time. I just hope her idea of roughing it isn't choosing between the Holiday Inn and the Best Western.

There's always a bear danger in most wilderness areas, so the USFS advises people to wear bells so they don't surprise a bear, and carry pepper spray to thwart attacks. It also helps to know whether there are black bears in your area or the more aggressive grizzlies. An easy way to tell is to learn to recognize bear droppings. Black bear droppings typically contain berries and leaves. Grizzly bear droppings contain bells and smell like pepper.

Re: Great camping/outdoor tips

The dryer lint works, but I take cotton balls and dip them in parifin wax.(the stuff you use for canning) They work great and will burn about 10 to 15 minutes. One small trick to them is to leave a small bit of the cotton ball un waxed, this makes them light real easy. Matter of fact, you can light them with one of those magnesium fire starters, or any sparking type fire starter. I also use them to start my charcoal. I have one of the charcoal chimneys that you use newspaper in, and just put one of the waxed cotton balls under it. Works like a charm.

Raccoons can open an igloo cooler, find the package with raw chicken and puncture it, contaminating all the contents of the cooler. Don't ask me how I know.

Leave a lighted lantern on your dock when you take the boat out at night - preferably a coleman fuel lantern with a full tank - they'll last darn near all night.

Re: Great camping/outdoor tips

Will the bells and pepper spray work on Mountian lions? that is what we are getting around here. we saw one drinking from our pool last summer. A Camp fire sounds soooo good right now ,the only problem is we are in a six month drought and need ten inches of rain to be able to even B.B.Q . P.S. The snow sleds that blow up are worth the $. my mom got my kids some and they asked her to get me one cause I was not sharing with them. they were only 5.00 at wal-mart. the regular sled kept stopping with me, this sled looked like a ski tube you would pull behind a boat with no hole in the middle. what a blast.
Thank you for all the info.
Serenity
