Trailer bearings
Gimbel bearing
Trim
Drive coupling
Steering swivel

It seems each lube job needs a different lube. Is there one grease that works for each application?

I have a 2008 4.3L TKS Alpha one

Re: Grease is grease?

Im certainly no expert but I use "marine" wheel bearing grease I get from my local auto parts store for all those applications. I lube everything every spring - including trailer bearings, so I dont think its really a problem.

Thanks Larry and Ted for your input. Being new to boating It's a bit confusing reading through manuals.

That is not an outboard but an I/O moving post to correct area. Welcome aboard.

Re: Grease is grease?

While any grease is better than no grease, You would be better off getting a tube of Mercruisers spline grease. It's made specifically for the coupler splines, and that is something you really want to use the right stuff on, not really good for bearings though.
If you are using Merc's grease, don't use the 2-4-C on the gimbal bearing. Since they added Teflon (many years ago) they had a service bulletin about not using it because it cause the bearing to slide, not roll as it should.

Thanks Don.

So Marine grease for most everything, Merc spline grease for the coupler splines and 2-4-C for the prop?
