Grayish smoke & rough idle after sitting

After the boat has sat long enough to cool, it exhausts grayish smoke & idles rough for a bit then runs great. In the driveway I see some sheen on the surface of the water pooled on the ground & I'm seeing black stains around the exhaust relief ports. Obviously it's burning some oil on startup. Plugs are also sooty. After it warms up it runs like a top.

This year the boat has been running better than ever so we've done some longer runs at a time. I'm wondering what would cause this kind of oil burning? Is it due to scoring in the cylinders or leakage past valves? It is a 32 yr old engine, but I don't have experience in engine rebuilding. I've done everything else mechanical so I'm not afraid of fixing stuff. Wondering if I should worry about it or get some additive like Restore or Slick 50 or just leave well enough alone? I did have to add 1qt of oil this summer for our last run of the season. Oil in the pan was still really clean (almost like new), just 1qt low.

Ayuh,... Generally speakin', valve seals is where I'd start lookin' with the smoke on start up...

How long run time was yer season, to use 2 quarts of oil,..??

Btw,.... Snake oils are just that,...

A compression, 'n leak down tests would help....

I only added 1qt this year not 2. Something in the head was what I was thinking too. Can I do a leak down test myself or does I require special tools? I'll have to read up in that.

You'll have to take it into a shop for the leak down test as it requires special tools. That's the best test you can do on it.

You shouldn't use any oil.
If your plugs are sooty, then the carb needs adjusting. The air screw is probably set wrong.
Once the plugs are sooty, change them and then adjust the air screw.
Once they soot up they will work but won't work as well.
The compression test will help diagnose.
Any blow by??
