Re: Grady White Transom Rot

About four years ago I had the transom on my 1988 23' Wellcraft redone. I got a quote for around $2,000.00 for a rebuild with a 3/4" marine plywood core or $2,800.00 using a sandwitched fiberglass foam core like used on race boats. I went with the fiberglass core as I only wanted to do this job once. I have no regrets. You can do it yourself but it is a big job and bigger than I wanted to get into. I have done a 19'er myself.

Have you checked the stringers as often they are as bad or worse than the transom?

I was quoted $5000 for a 17' Wellcraft and did it myself for less than $300. I have to paint the boat because I cut the end off.

I got quoted $2700, i need to remove the rigging on the engine, they do the rest.

I am reluctant to cut the rear of my boat off lol since i don't have much experience. Gonna give SoLittle's guy a holler if he checks back in here.

It sounds hard but its really not. You cut the end out leaving a 1" lip on the sides and bottom. Scrape out all the rot and use a piece of cardboard to make a pattern. Then cut one piece and fit it right then use it to cut another one. Epoxy them together, fit it in place and mix fibergalss fibers in epoxy to fill in the gap, like a marine bondo. Then glass over it and if you want try to tint the glass or paint it. You can do it in one week if you took off. Just a thought, I didnt have the money.

I paid $68 for two quarts of epoxy and one quart of hardner, $70 for marine plywood 3/4" thick and a few bucks for glass cloth and fibres. $14 for 7 clamps and $10 for a 3" air cutting tool. About $200 and 30 hours of hot sweaty work.

Re: Grady White Transom Rot

I had my transom redone by Carribean Craft in Princeton Fl (305) 257-1238. Talk to Jose. Omar at Ocean Spirit Racing (305) 444-3877 removed & reinstalled the engines (two OMC V4 SeaDrives). Paid $2000 for the transom work & $1,000 for the removal & install of the engines. I had this done in 1999 & have had no problems. They cutout a section of the gunnels & floor & worked from the inside. When the section was reinstalled you could not tell where the cut was made.

I wish I could remember the name of the fiberglass stuff they used instead of a plywood core for the transom. If you talk to them ask & post back please.
