Forget the iPad. An iPad on a boat in my opinion is a bad idea. It may fall overboard, it may get wet (and ruined) and it won’t provide you with vital information that you need. The Garmin unit not only provides you with GPS to get you too your destination and back home/dock but also gives you depths and allows you to see underwater obstructions and shallow areas. This is especially important when you are in new areas you’re unfamiliar with. I am constantly checking my depth finder/fish finder. It has saved me numerous times over the years from running a ground and hitting submerged obstructions. And unlike an iPad they are designed for the marine environment. I am typing this now on my iPad but my iPad stays out of my boat.

iPad is the way to go. Multi function, updates regularly without messing around with cards, clearer screen, just better.

Caveat is that you need to get a waterproof case (catalyst lifeatyle or otter) and some sort of Mount (sea sucker naked Flex is the best imo).

If you get the cell enabled iPad, you don't need a GPS transponder (Bad Elf).

Depth finder is needed regardless of what you choose though.

forget the ipad. bring your ipad out in the direct sunlight. it will shut down shortly after from over-heat. a garmin is sunlight readable and doesnt shut down

plus the garmin comes with a transducer to actually bounce sonar off the bottom under your to tell you what is going on. the SV's have side view to see what you are cruising past when you are fishing, etc.

all GPS maps are all iffy at best as they are surveyed only once every 6 months for some locations and every 5 years in other. channels move, water rises/lowers, etc, so you need that transducer to give you bottom readings.

at best, an ipad with only the ability to be +/- 6 feet at best can only guestimate where you are and will not read what is under your boat.....ever.
