Got spark, Won't run 9.5hp need help!

I've got a problem keeping the engine running for more than 10-15 seconds. Here;s what happens: 73 Johnson 9.5 ran great when stored 3 yrs ago. ran all gas out before storing. Carb and jets were clean when i inspected them, but removed carb and soaked in carb cleaner, blew out with compressed air. All openings clear. fresh fuel in tank, cap is vented, bulb is pumped, fuel in bowl of carb, starts when choked, but won't stay running long enough to adjust carb.New fuel filter w gasket, exhaust hose is good,engine cover is off, plugs are wet when checked, cleaned up and same thing happens. What next?

Will spark jump a ~5/16" gap?

What happens when you try to restart?

Did you pull carb because is wasn't running well or before the 1st start-up.

How many turns out are you on the low speed needle?

If you "Gun it" right from jumpstreet, how does it respond?

Is the primer bulb still firm after it conks out?

That's a start.

Now mt wild guess is did you check the fuel pump? AND is the carb on tight?

haven't checked how far the spark will jump yet, will look at that tomorrow. To restart, must choke again, sqeeze bulb a couple times, bulb is not hard
Pulled carb because it wouldn't run, However, I only pulled the top half of carb to expose the bowl, it was spotless. Checked drain in bowl, fuel flows out freely. I'm about 1/2 to 1 turn out, but have tried it in 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 etc. i have been able to engage in gear and adjust idle knob to increase idle and it runs approximatel 30 seconds longer. prolly buying a manual tomorrow, could figure how to remove the lower half of carb. maybe flywheel has to be removed for hidden bolts? Removed fuel pump and cleaned all rubber seals, could they be too stiff to pulsate maybe?

Bob VT, thanks for the link. Will check it out. I thinking the fuel pump diaphrams might be too stiff to work properly. I dunno

If you advance your throttle you will have access to the hidden bolt. That one stumped me and some one here at Iboats told me. I felt kind of silly but have seen many ask since. I am thinking you carb. needle/seat is leaking gas. I would suggest your due for a carb. kit but I am not real certain so wait for others to reply before ordering one. I too have a 73 and I am ashamed to say I never used it once this season. Best of luck. Rick.

Update! Removed carb and found the high speed jet was clogged, couldn't get it out so i ran a torch tip cleaner thru it, then soaked it in cleaner. Blew it out with compressed air and reassembled. Engine now starts when choked and will run about 3-5 minutes then suddenly dies. Choke it and it restarts easily, runs again for a few minutes then dies. Seems to start running rough about the same time the water output increases thru the tell tale. Any suggestions as to why it suddenly dies? Will rev up with no problem

Sounds like you could be running out of gas. Have you tried pumping the bulb just as it starts to die? Tank vented? Are your gas connections tight (could be sucking air)? To you pump the bulb after it dies for re-start? Rick.

I pump the bulb frequently while it's running just to make sure it's not the pump. yes I do pump the bulb again before restatring. Put new Plugs in today, same thing happens

Do you know where you could borrow a tank and hose so you could rule that aspect out? You could be sucking in air and yet pumping the bulb doesn't help to keep it running. The time 3 to 5 minutes sounds like the time it would run until the bowl was drained. That would indicate a stuck float and needle yet again once it stalls you pump it and it starts right up. I am perplexed. Your comment about increased flow at the tell tale is a strange one to me as well. I can't say that mine ever changes water quantity or at least I've never noticed it do that. Does your motor ever get too hot? Lots of questions but I am thinking out loud as I type. Rick.
