So bought an old motor off a guy for ten bucks. Its and old Evinrude outboard. Not sure what year, or horse power. The cowl says "Lark" on it. I had a lot of fun working on my 52 evinrude 15 last winter. I have so much gratitude for the folks who where beneficial throughout the process.

I am ready to do it again. I will need help.

Condition of motor:
- laying in yard for who knows how many years.

- put on stand. blew out dirt and grit.

- decent amount of oil dripped out of the lower unit as it stood.

- cowl was full of all kinds of dirt and debris. Spark plug wires shot, electric ignition wires shot.

- Motor also has pull start. With motor in gear pulling slowly on starter motor turns freely and prop turns.

What should I do to this thing? Where should I start?

My goal, or wish, is to get this motor running....If it can be revived.

there is some rust but all moving parts seem to work. though many springs and other such parts rusted out and gone.

Re: Got a new project, need help.

All my motors had been sitting for years in barns, yards, etc. before I
started working on them. The truth is that if you want a dependable
motor you are going to have to dissemble just about everything. That's
the only way to know whats good and whats not. Do a compression check
on the motor first. If compression is good, you may only have to replace
the lower seal/head gasket/points/coils/condensers (things get in the cylinders, like sand if the motor
was swamped i.e. complete teardown).
Lower units need to be taken apart as bearings almost always need replacement.
Correct period paint is not cheap also. In short, budget about $600 to $700 to
bring it back to like new condition. Any motor can be brought back to working
order, I bought a frozen up Fleetwin just to see if I could free up stuck pistons.
Good Luck
P.S., get a parts manual for your motor, that way once your motor becomes a pile
of dissembled parts in a box(es) you can get the puzzle back together correctly. I
had to buy one for a Johnson RDE-16 since the motor sat dissembled for two years
and my memory ain't near that good.

The Evinrude Larks were 30, 35 & 40hp motors over the years.
We really need the model numbers to id. the motor.
Sounds like a project.
Good Luck!

Ten bucks for a motor that spins over free is a heck of a good deal, especially if it's complete. First off, I would get a good bunch of fresh fuel mix in the crank case and lube it all up good, then take a compression test. If the numbers look good, then clean it all up and give it a major tune up. Once you do that, then you should have a good reliable motor. Come back once you have the compression numbers, then we'll get headed in the next direction. ;)

Thanks for responding folks, also for the links. So the only numbers I can find on the motor are located on circular plate about the size of a quarter. This plate looks like it could actually be the top of a bolt. It reads "Evinrude 25526 17812" Is this the identification number needed to determine motor size?

If it really is a '56, 30 hp, you got yourself a real gem. Check the forums/web for info on "Big Twins" and you'll find tons of stuff. I had a '66, 33 hp and it was great. You can get virtually any part you may need here at iboats. Keep us posted and holler if you get stuck. Here's a great link to get you started.

That is good news. Thank you for getting that info for me. I plan to get started monday. Most the dirt is gone but still some grime. Going to go through the links provided and take notes. Excited to start the process. Very pleased to hear that parts can be found with ease on iboats. This forum is such a great resource.

The old 30hp Larks are awesome motors. You'll enjoy working with that one. 1956 - 58 Big Twins are my favorite motors.
