My view is that its my life and the kids are along for the ride until they can be on their own. Of course I don't have kids but if I did that would be my philosophy.
LOL So many funny angles to that. I'm thinking you should stick with your current family arrangement

I worked one week in North Dakota, and got locked out of my rental car @ -33F degrees. Within 5 minutes, my hands with the heaviest thinsulate gloves were really burning. The economy's great and salaries are high, but those guys' earn every penny working in oil.

It'd be okay to work there May to October, and go back south for the rest of the time. But life doesn't work that way.

I still don't understand why all the Dakotas farmers are not in Florida all Winter. Wait, they do move south for 4 months.

Yep Oil Country as far north as it is in ND is as cold as it is in Northern MN which is a good 10 degrees or more colder than here in the Minneapolis suburbs. None the less, desperate times...
Lot's of guys there are there for this exact reason.

Yea, I had a casual conversation one time with a previous employer about moving closer to the headquarters, as I was commuting quite a ways. The HR VP asked me if I had kids in middle school or high school, which I did at the time. He replied, yup, you're not moving !!! :D

Knowing me; I'd stew about it for months and months until I talked it to death... and then when everyone was sick of listening to me... I'd go.
I'd have a tough time leaving 'home' but in the end I would for a better life. You can always come/go back...
I would also definitely find some work worth moving for and then move the family.
