Hello,
I am looking at a 1994 Alumacraft Trophy 170 and am wondering if the price sounds ok. The motor is a 1987 Johnson 90,and also has a very new looking Mariner 8hp.It has a bimini top that covers most of the boat and also a snap on top that covers the front 2 seats.trailer included also.I was able to use the boat over the 4th weekend and everything works great except for the fuel gauge on the console. The price is $5500. I'm new into boat's,just picked up a 1984 Galaxie Deckboat last year and am looking to upgrade a bit. Thank's in advance =)

Re: Good price?

Check the engine over well. If possible go out for a demo in the boat. Sometimes an engine will run in nuetral but won't when under a load. (happened to me)
Don't expect to get out in it right away either. It will probably take a while to sort through all of the bad jobs that the old owner did and fix them. A good price is whatever you're willing to pay.

Doesn't sound like a bad price, nor a steal, if condition is good, especially since you said that your test-drive went well. However, you say you're new to boats you have no idea what to look for, so be very cautious. You can find general pricing for boats at www.nada.com, but the condition of the boat and motor is much more critical than actual price. If you have a problem with the motor that requires rebuild or replacement you're looking at adding a very fast $2,000 to $5,000 that you'll have to add. It would be very smart to pay a marina to give it a once-over before you agree to buy it. That motor is getting pretty old for a 2 stroke, so a compression test would be tops on my list, as well as checking for the cleanliness and any sign of water in the gear oil. Aluminum boats don't hide much in terms of structural problems, but you still want to make sure the transom still looks straight and strong, any rivets aren't showing signs of leakage or seeping, and walk every inch of the floor looking for soft spots. By paying a mechanic for a thorough check of condition, you're only risking a couple hundred bucks at most instead of thousands.

Moxit - A "fair" price for a used rige is extremely location (and can be seasonally) dependent. What might be fair in N.Y. could be outrageous here in Florida. Here my guess is that rig might be worth $3,500.00 if in pristine condition.

Re: Good price?

Thank you all for your input! I decided to pass on this boat, save some money and maybe go for something new in the 10k-12k range next year. I was looking at a few at a local shop and they have some nice ones in that range. I had alot of fun on my Galaxie last year and plan to put it in this weekend so i'm in no rush. Thank's again =)

Moxit - You might want to wait until mid winter & look for someone who is looking to "get out from under." Then is a good time to check your local banks and see if they have any repos or know of someone who needs $$$ quick.
