Re: Good Price? Ebbtide boat

I emailed the 90 Chap guy and he said it has a beta outdrive, is that a good one, no one has commented about that one.

No such thing as a beta outdrive. Are you sure he didn't say Alpha?

In his add it says merc. So that much is ok. Now you better go have a close look at it.

This is the exact email he sent me

its a beta outdrive. everything on this boat is solid. there are no problems, its ready to put in the water today (if you don't mind freezing). the boat has been very well maintained (see pics attached). it has always been stored indoors. included, but not listed in the add, are.....fish/depth finder, fenders, 2-deck lights and a spotlight. i'm looking for more like $3800. thats at the low end of the value on this boat, in fair condition, and you can see from the pics that its in much better than fair condition. the blue looks faded but its not. it's been sitting since july and it just needs to be cleaned up.

Pass.
Slow down....
THeres a LOT more sellers than buyers, time is your freind, take time to learn the mkt and how to inspect a boat, go look at a few, walk around the deck feeling for soft spots.

I second the alum choice, better first time choice all around.
I would also opt for outboard power. Much easier to work and a LOT cheaper to replace. And the alum boats are the only ones that you can sell for at least as much as you paid...if not more.
Glass boats> fat chance.

fwiw,
never trust or believe the seller. they have motivation to stretch the truth or plain ol out right lie.

never buy a boat w/o a sea trial.

assume that a $3500 boat will also likely need something repaired about it.
my pre-recession boat @ $4300 needed a manifold and riser ($600 round abouts) + a full bellows and shift cable and ft. seal in the drive replaced. parts and tools for that was about $750. labor was done by me with the help of iboats friends. those repairs repairs could have easy been an extra $1k in labor.. boats are expensive for sure..

I know I should probably slow it down, but the guy with the 90 chap. is coming very close to my area to visit is mother, so I'm gonna check that boat out anyway, couldn't hurt. I'm just wondering If the 5.0 305 mercruiser engine is reliable, I know its has a two bolt main engine block, but that wont matter cuz im not putting any power adders on, but is there anything else that they are notorious for that I don't know about?

That drivetrain is fine. Maintenance and current condition are key now. If there is a ski locker, have a look and feel for soft wood under the deck. The more you can check before buying, the better chance you have of not getting a "project".

Re: Good Price? Ebbtide boat

Im still checking you the Chaparral this weekend but this almost seems too good to pass up:

http://delaware.craigslist.org/boa/2074929375.html

I can get it for $1000 and this is what the seller had to say about it:

"The boat is mechanically sound, the electronics are working, the floor
and transom are sound, the boat was fogged/drained and refilled with
RV-50 antifreeze, it could be restarted but if you decide not to
complet a sale I would charge you $50.00 to re-winterize. The
manifolds and riser are fine. Yes if you repair the seat bases and
replace the toggle switches at the helm that need replacement you
would have a reliable boat in the spring. I would also suggest
removing the fuel in the tank and refilling with new. The gas is
probably 2 years old and stale. Thanks for reconsidering."
Stuart

The other two I am considering would be both running, ready to go boats:

http://reading.craigslist.org/boa/2056880145.html --- for $3650

or A decent 241 four winns liberator that apparently has had almost 10 grand recently put into it, I can get this boat for $3600
