I have read several post about using gold fish for bait on trotlines, limblines, ect. Sounds like it works good. Where do you get them, a pet store? I don't recall seeing them at a bait shop.

Check MO law, first, stl.

Many states don't allow goldfish or any other exotic species as bait.

Where do you think all those #$%^&*( carp came from?

Just check the lake regulations first... Some may not allow them...

Re: gold fish

Thanks guys. Id like to try em on a trotline. I can't find a good bait for trotlines. I have had pretty good luck with chicken gizzards and hearts, but usually end up with a couple of good sized snappin turtles. I don't like getting that close to those guys.

Re: gold fish

This is something I tried once. Bought some small goldfish at Walmart and put them, at the river into a 3 liter Coke bottle that had a bunch of holes drilled in it. Had a hole poked into the lid of the bottle with fishing line coming out of it. I sank the bottle in a nice tree top and tied the line off to a limb to look as if someone got snagged. Came back a few hours later and WOW, did we start catching Crappie!! Used this trick for two more days until the fish died. I have tried this with minnows and works just as good.
It is illegal to introduce any non native fish into waters here in Ala. I didn't introduce them as I kept them in a bottle.

Re: gold fish

There is a bait store in Troy MO that used to sell them. I think the place is called Buzzys bait right off the road by McDonalds. Used them for bass years ago and did pretty well with them since they do stand out!

JB, Quit having sex with the bait and it won't reproduce, lol. I agree with you 100% on the damn carp. Lake Conroe fishing north of Houston was about destroyed by the "grass eating" carp.

Re: gold fish

You gotta be kidding me. A gold fish can get loose from your hook, reproduce, and grow into a big nasty carp. I knew carp were from the gold fish family, but I guess I never put two and two together

Re: gold fish

Goldfish are from the same family as carp, cyprindae, and they can live in a pond frozen over the winter for a short time. Carp are the last thing to die in a water that is being froze out. I now live on a lake(some idiot in Ohio says that 100' across body of water is a lake and Texas has the most lakes because of the man made ponds and we are only 7th) and I know for a fact they can not make it in my "Lake" over the winter. Turtles do fine and so do frogs but goldfish, minnows etc-good luck.
As to something coming off the hook? Have you ever tried to get live bait across the border to Canada?

Well, as far as bait coming off the hook I knew that part. I am still doubting whether a gold fish can grow into a big old carp.

I've heard that a lake in Indiana, or Illinios has been over run with goldfish... They are reproducing and taking over....

Anyone remember this story (probably about a year old)...

I've had goldfish in my garden pond and some of them are 3 years old... It will freeze over if I turn off my pump.. But I leave it running so there is a small opening left...

And they reproduce every year....
