We will be in Appelton WI for the PGI convention in the first week of Aug, spending a few days at the convention, then bum around the area, maybe go see one of the big ponds, What are some good things to take a 2yo and a 6yo to?

Appelton is on the East/middle side

Appleton... hmm... Well, I grew up in Green Bay (which will be about a 30 minute drive north). 2 yo and 6yo would probably enjoy Bay Beach. Its sort of a mini amusement park; centered around kiddies your age.

Bay Beach Website

Another place in GB you could check out is the NEW Zoo. (NEW = NorthEast Wisconsin)

NEW Zoo Website

I don't know where you are going to be staying, but if you are willing to commute to appleton from Green Bay for the convention, the wife and kids (and you I guess) you could stay at the Tundra Lodge - it is a huge hotel (for Green Bay standards) that has an indoor waterpark.

Tundra Lodge Website

That place is right up the road from Lambeau Field so if you were willing to force the wife and kids to go to that you could probably check that out too.

I will find out some more places and get back to you. I know there are more but its been a while since I was 6 yo... :D

Sean

P.S.

Don't find the drive from GB to Appleton intimidating - there's nothing to it.

OK, I have a couple more things...

In Ashwaubenon (suburb of Green Bay) there is the National Railroad museum -- its actually about 1/2 mile from my mom's house. That place is very cool - you can walk around the trains, go on a high-rise platform and take a train ride.

National Railroad Museum Website

Next, you can go to a Timber Rattlers game - its a minor league baseball team in Appleton. I find their games much more entertaining than a Brewer game.

Timber Rattlers Website

There's also the Wildlife Sanctuary in GB... it is right up the road from Bay Beach. I guess they have a petting zoo as well.

Other stuff...

If you like planes and stuff like that, the EAA museum is a great way to kill a day.

EAA

The EAA convention is about that time. There are planes from every type of venue that you can think of including the private spacecraft that went into orbit. (I saw it last year) I'll bet the kids would love it along with a plane ride. There is a program that allows for kids to get a ride for free. It is designed to get younger folks interested in general aviation. There are even airshows every day!

Willem Dafoe is from there. Willem Who??? The Green Goblin from the "Daredevil" movie. He was the scarred guy in "Apocolypse Now", too. But I doubt he has a museum ... yet. Another Appleton native does. Erich Weiss, but you know him by a different name. Have a look... Houdini Museum

Kaukauna is practically a suburb and they have a drag strip there. Wisconsin International Raceway

EAA costs a bunch to get in. You have to join. But you can see plenty from streets around Whitman Airfield. The last sunday of the show is the best show day, but none are bad. It's early in August.

If you make it to G.Bay make sure you at least go by Lambeau Field, the greatest sports venue still in use. Inside is where real football is played regardless of the weather. None of that sissy dome stuff don't ya know. The Packer Hall of Fame is not to be missed. Your kids will remember Bay Beach. I think the rides are still less than a quarter.

If you go to the Wisconsin Maritime Musuem, make sure to take your kids to "Bernsteins". A REAL old fashion candy shop and soda fountain. Get your wife something while you are there. You will understand. You can hit a 6 iron from the musuem to the candy shop. If you can't find ask anyone. Everyone in town knows where it is.

Also there is the Rogers Street fishing village musuem in Two Rivers just up the road. 10 minutes max. Not all that remarkable on its own, but if you are there it follows the theme.

It's a shame you are not coming 2 weeks earlier you could come to the I-boats get together.

Definitely check out the Timber Rattlers, those ball games are fun.

If you have a whole day to spare, and you don't mind driving a couple hours, checkout the Wisconsin Dells. I know it can get expensive, and it's crowded, but the kids love it. Take the "Original Ducks" tour. My kids (6 and 2) were blown away by the ducks tour. Another favorite is the indoor and outdoor water parks at Kalahari. The indoor wave pool is a blast.

Check out the dells website for more attractions.
