Re: Going to look for a new puter.

Compaqs are good. My wife has a Compaq Presario 3000. It was highly rated in pcmag and consumer reports.

Noelm, I agree. Love my G5 and 23" screen, but Apples are too dang expensive. Unless you're doing some type of multimedia stuff, graphic design, video editing etc... they aren't worth it.

I think that they are all about the same these days. It depends of course on what type of processor and how much ram is in it, etc. A few years back Consumer Reports rated them by frequency of repair. Emachines ranked at the bottom of the list.

Re: Going to look for a new puter.

Ya'll won't believe this but as I was going through the replies, the blue screen of death jumped up. CRAP! says I. A sledge hammer is what's needed here! My 911 pager is the only thing that saved it.

Really appreciate all the input folks. My better half, she herself, bought a Dell. Seems like a nice set up....quick and responive to commands....just like a finely tuned outboard. I don't know though.....so many out there. I'll take all that you have offered and try and make an "informed" decision on what to get. I kinda' like Bubbakats idea on getting one built the way I want it.

Thanks again for the help.... :)

Jim

Neal Boortz advertises for a computer on his show that I like, but I can't remember the name of. They have a three year warranty, and if you have problems with it, they have 24 hour cust. service lines, plus if you have the internet they log into your machine and fix it or figure out whats wrong over the INTERNET. Listen to his show tomorrow and you'll hear which brand it is. Plus, they build to spec so you can get the AMD processor.

Why wouldn't you look at a Apple Mac?
I am serious here. Don't have one my self but seriously considering one to replace this in the future.
What are the pros and cons between the 2 types?.
Anybody know.
Cheers
Phillip

If somebody sold cars that you could only drive on certain roads, and could never be upgraded, and go horribly out of style after 6 months, AND cost more than all the other cars, would you buy it? That's what would happen if Apple made cars. Apple is switching over to x86 Intel processors, which means even apple agrees it is stupid to be incompatible.

Their computers are good for a few very high end graphics applications and nothing more. For any home user it is a HUGE waste of money.

A Mac Mini does everthing a home puter user needs to do, for $500-$700. And os x Tiger is so much better than Panther was, which was better than Windows.
No more microsoft !!

Re: Going to look for a new puter.

Just an FYI. IBM sold their desktop devision to a off shore company in China. The new company, I think it is Leveno, is licienced to use their badge. My company is about 90% complete on our desktop refresh. That amounts to about 7000 desktops over the course of this year so far. Mostly IBM desktops, some Pansonic laptops, Toshiba laptops and Acer tablets. Not overly impressed with the IBM's or Acer's. Still too proprietary. What every you do. Make sure you install as much ram as possible, financially and physically with the fastest processor you can afford. I would suggest that you stick with a Intel based machine. There is the greatest selection of after market hardware and software availibe for those systems when you wish to upgrade. Another aspect that you may want to consider is after sales support. Pretty important if you don't have anyone close at hand when something blows up.

Dell, enough said. I don't have the top of the line model, but it has been problem free out of the box.
That works for me.

But hey, I am not racist, I also have an IBM and a Toshiba. :D

Re: Going to look for a new puter.

I have specifically purchased Dells for my entire company. In fact, there isn't a machine running in my computer network that isn't Dell from the server down to the workstations.

When it comes to computers, I am a firm believer in the long-term reliability and performance of a machine. By that, I look for a company that can provide a product that is cost effective, yet has little-to-no down-time. Since I started purchasing Dells for my organization 5 years ago, I have had to make a total of 4 phone calls to Dell about defective hardware.

Thats less than one hardware failure per year. This is spread across 50 workstations and servers. That is enough justification for me to reccomend Dell to anyone that asks.

HP would come in at a close second only because of their history of reliability in their servers. I figure if you can build a reliable server - you can most definitely build a great workstation.

Sean

And for $5-700 you can build or buy a MUCH more capable PC. The biggest problem with a Mac is next month when it's outdated, you have to throw it away and buy a whole new one. With a PC, you upgrade it.

Then there's the fact that they're incompatible with the other 95% of the world.

Zmoz, not too sure were you get your info from but you are way off in your statements about mac Vs PC,and out of date and thrown away in 6 months, by the way,I do not want to start and ford v chev or mac V PC thing here but, I manage a huge fleet of both Macs and Dell PC's and know first hand which company I would rather deal with and which product has been built to a standard, not a price, but I use both and do not have a favorite if I was to be in the market to get a new machine.

Re: Going to look for a new puter.

noelm, I have nothing against the company. I have an Ipod and I say it's the best music player you can buy, period. Their computers DO work better on some high end graphics applications, but that is the limit of their usefulness. A home user will get the same use out of a PC or a Mac, the difference is, the PC cost less, is just as reliable and has good support, is compatible with nearly every computer product, instead of incompatible with most computer products. Why pay more for the same thing with less usefulness?

In 3 years can you uprade your Mac's hard drive, CPU, memory, optical drives, operating system, and add cards with the newest technology? Not even close. I can with my PC. A few hundred bucks every couple years and it's brand new again.

Re: Going to look for a new puter.

hey remember I said no mac V PC discussion, but I must say, yes, you can upgrade memory, drive, optical drives etc and add some cards, but, why would you want to when it had technology years ahead of a Pc in the first place, when was the last time you saw a PC with built in firewire?? who had the first built in USB and gigiabit Ethernet? the first with DVD burners as standard? anyway enough said, I still have both on my desk and run Microsoft Office on them and can happily move files back and forth. nuff said!

I had a laptop with it YEARS ago. That is irrelevant, because firewire cards cost $10, and firewire is mostly useless with the much more popular and compatible USB 2.0.

And, as I said, Macs are good for high end graphics applications. That's about it. I doubt anybody asking at iboats what computer they should get will be doing any high end graphics processing...
