Re: going slightly mad

It takes several seconds for the water to circulate through the motor - sometimes as much as a half minute or so. If testing in a bucket, be sure the water level is above the waterpump bulge in the housing as these pumps are not self-priming.

If the motor shifted prior to your dropping the unit to deal with the waterpump, then it should shift afterwards. The only thing that could affect that would be if you had the shift coupling mis-aligned. If you removed anything else - .ie the shift pivot screw at the base of the gearcase skeg, then you may need to revisit getting that back in correctly. Outside of that, there's really nothing else to go out of whack.

I agree. Messing with the impeller should not have an effect on the shifting. You either pulled out that pin that near the bottom of the motor at the gears, or you didn't reconnect the shift linkage in the middle of the motor's body. I put the motor in reverse and use needlenose plyers to grab the shift rod coming from the lower unit and push it up as far as it will go up into the shiftlink coupler, then screw in the bolt making sure the shift rod doesn't slip down any before screwing it in.
