I've stripped out the tinny and am prepping it for sealer. How clean does the rivets and surrounding area have to be for the Gluvit to be effective. Some areas are covered with factory paint from the '50s

Re: Gluvit question

Iv learned that the key is prep. I sealed my 12ft v hull project with gluvit and had to redo a small section because i got a little truck bed liner in there and thought it would "help" seal the boat. Nah, it was bad. The stuff peeled off with the truck bed liner.

I would suggest sanding it as well as you would if you were going to paint it to a smooth finish. Gluvit likes roughed aluminum with no dirt/dust/old paint on it.

Its more work cleaning all the rivets out, i know, i did it too, but its way more work doing it all over again right.

Good luck!

Re: Gluvit question

Clean the surface down to aluminum with paint remover, wire brush, sandpaper, etc. A little time now is a big investment.

Re: Gluvit question

I just finished stripping the paint off of my 12' aluminum. I used aircraft remover and that was a mistake....there's a rubber seal in the riveted seams and maybe the rivets too on some boats...I would say try sanding and a wire brush before using any chemical that may react with those gaskets... or at least keep the paint thinner out of those seams..
