I've got an '88 Glastron merc that I just took out of winter storage. When I went to start the engine for the first time I hooked a flapper to my garden hose and connected it to the lower unit. When I opened the engine hatch to get some fresh air in the compartment before starting it I noticed that there is water coming out the upper right side of the engine. With a flashlight I can't see exactly where is is coming from. In the front top of the engine is a 6' or so curved hose that when I squeeze it I can get water to leak out when the garden hose is turned off. Any idea what my problem is or how I can trace it to fix it?

Turn the hose on, lift the hatch, start the engine and look again and SEE where the water is coming from.
We can guess forever, but until you locate the leak, you can't fix it.

There is a big square section on the right side of the engine that it looks has the carbs on top of it. The water looks like it is coming out bewteen that unit and the main body of the engine but up high so I can't see exactly where. (obviously from my language hopefully it is obvious my engine knowledge is minimal.

Sounds like you have a busted exhaust manifold. Probably freeze damage.
Since you don't know what it's called, you need a pro to fix it. There may also be other problems.

Do you know of any web resources that I can look at that will give me a diagram of this engine so that I can better use the corect terms to describe the location?

While the link below is for a newer model than you have, the manual will give you a lot of information about your engine and how it works. At least enough to understand the cooling system.
Section 6 should be your first place to look.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/13/13covr2.pdf

the drain for the manifold is on bottom be sure its not left out causing leak, also the drain for the block is low on right as you face the engine so could it be that simple?
