I have a 30 foot wood/glass river boat that I need to apply some new fiberglass on were the bow sweeps up. I can not turn this boat over and I have worked a bit with glass. I am a bit worried about the cloth staying in place while it cures as I am afraid gravity will pullit down. Piece will be about 4 feet square. Any adivce?

Yukon72,

You can cover with thick plastic (like visqueen(sp?), DO NOT use thin cheap painters plastic) pull tight and tape the edges to hold in place. The glass/resin will not stick to the plastic.

When set pull the tape and plastic off. This works great with epoxy resin and gives an excellent smooth finish as long as there are no seams or wrinkles in the plastic. I did this in several place on my rebuild with very good results. I believe the same holds true for polyester resin and glass.

Peace.

Ed.

The cloth will stay in place by itself. Just prime the surface with resin, and let it sit for a little while. Whet the mat and let it soak for a while. Then put the mat on, it will stick like wallpaper, Brush a little resin on afterwards, and you'l be fine.
I glassed wooden reinforcements under my foredeck this summer, upside down. Was a little messy, as I was lying underneth, its a 17' runabout. No mats dropped down, all stayed in place. Almost had to have my hair cut, to get the resin drops out
