Gimbal bearing/bellows?

Symptom: when the drive is tucked all the way in (down), there's an odd noise, almost a grinding noise. The noise lets up once the drive is trimmed out some. Would this be the gimbal bearing going/gone bad? And if it needs to be replaced, go ahead and do the bellows while in there? What should this cost, approximately? Thanks for any advice!

Edit: this is a Mercruiser 4.3 carb, A1G2

I would remove the drive and inspect the gimbal on u joints. Usually the gimbal growls less when worn if drive shaft is straighter vs up? I wonder if something is rubbing or u joints have a bad spot.
when u say cost to replace do u mean parts or taking it and having the repair done.

replacing bellows depends on what u find and age of the bellows. I just did my bellows last spring on my 04 boat, they were original but still in decent shape not leaking just had some chaffing on outside that was going to eventually leak.
so if they look ok and aren’t leaking why change them. If you just need a gimbal bearing or u joints just do that, but if you find water in the bellows or cracks replace them

OEM bellows kit for parts is just under $300 includes all bellows and gimbal, if u need ujoints add another $100-200 depending on which joints u buy. If you are doing bellows check your shift cable($150). Labor to do all that depending on where u are and if it is a big dealer vs independent mechanic, for all three probably $900-1500. I do all my own work so may not be best judge of labor costs…the bellows took me two weekends … mostly screwing around getting shift cable routed… but hey first set made it 18 years so should be my kids problem when it needs it again

Like Scott says and pray your transom is not rotten. Gimbal bearings and u-joints are cheap compared to replacing transom. Trust me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did the the fall of the outdrive, take it out ... inspect it and lube the u joints and the shaft .. clean the bellows rubber see if its worn. inspect the oil outdrive .
many people inspect the aluminum corrosion then the bellows are a sand paper alum ....

Sure . . . u-joints and/or gimbal bearing. Might as well do both while you got the 'hood up' Probably cost me 4 beers, plus parts. 😆

Yeah, most likely a sign in the uj being less than ideal. When the uj is anything other than at its least stressed angle of driven load position and anything less than good…she’ll make a grumbling. But even in good order, when hard down or up at at her extreme limits, she’ll make a noise. Likewise for the gimble to a lesser extent. Any doubt, best to do them both. Many fall short and are fooled by thinking the uj is good after a visual…but my experience is that a visual on what appears to be a decent shape UJ is not to be trusted. They can often look in good shape, but a closer inspection will tell you otherwise…especially compared to a new one sat side by side. The west on them isn’t always obvious to the eye (when in place) on a quick once over

I seriously doubt your transom being 2 1/4 thick does have some wood in it

I have a Cobalt and it has absolutely ZERO wood in the transom. Have no idea what boat the OP has so who knows with his.
Also have a 2003 Campion with no wood anywhere in its structure or finish. Agree.

depending on condition of wooden transom and /or stringers, you may have flexing ROT. EASY TO test with drill and 3/8" drill bit. If crap or water comes out, you will be pissing away good money patching crap.

I would say this is jumping to conclusions without knowing all the particulars of the boat.

No reason to be drilling holes in a transom without other investigation first.
