The girlfriend set a Christmas gift limit to which I agreed to.........

1. Do I stick to limit so that she doesnt feel guilty?

2. Do I go over the limit because I can, and hope she doesnt mind?

The limit is $50, which I find to be slightly low, but she is on a more fixed budjet.

Stick to the limit. She will feel put down if you spend a lot more than she does.

Re: Gift Giving Limits

The limits are tuff when you enjoy being able to give. My wife used to set limits for us before we were married(still kinda does). I always went over just a little, but not too much. I spent several hundred more one year, she loved the gifts, but I know she felt bad because she couldn't do the same. No matter what I said, it didn't really help.

My advice is to definately stay close to the given budget. Not as much fun, but it helps with the feelings she may have.

.Pony.,
Seems to me ya only set a max not a min. I would have to get her a gag gift to start with. And after she opened it, reiterate the limit max, and then spring the real gift on her.  :D :D :D As for the limit I use them as a general guide line, just don't stray to far from the line.

Stick to the limit.

We go one further. We have the whole family together for Thanksgiving dinner. All names go into a hat. Everyone picks a name and becomes 'Secret Santa'. We buy one anonymous $75.00 gift for one person. That's it...we stick to the limit, xmas is done on a realistic budget, and everyone gets something the actually need or want. The detective work is kinda fun, too :)

We still buy a few things for our kids but nothing extravagant.

Re: Gift Giving Limits

My wife and I have a $200 limit this year and I will most likely go over a little. If we go shopping together and she points out something she likes I will sometimes buy it and give it to her that day. Then its not a Christmas gift so its not subject the the Christmas gift limit. :)

LMAO@ alden

I think my best choice is a combination of things mentioned so far. I already bought her a Christmas tree because the one she had was too small for my taste. I think I will go at or slightly above the limit and then make a nice dinner for her and get a nice bottle of wine.

Funny you should mention that, a few months ago she mentioned she had a dream that i proposed to her on Christmas Eve. We both laughed it off, BUT if and when I do propose it will be on a Christmas Eve sometime

Thanks for the help so far guys

.Pony. you can't ever propose on Christmas eve, she will be looking for that.
Got to pop the question the week before, to catch her off guard.

I really likes this one.. BTDT :D it was great!

Stratocaster
When we do the holidays with my side in Oregon we dont do it anonymous, but same thing and your right. The detective work can be a lot of fun finding out what they really want.

Stick to the limits,we set limits a few years ago when we started dating,i went way over she was on a tight budget and i had the money i thought i was doing a good thing but i could tell it upset her, dinners nice and alot of snuggling and maybe a chick flick, but just show her alot of attention and gratitude and everbody will be fine, its not always about the gifts.fredricks of hollywood has some nice non-christmas gifts :D

Pony, I've been in the same situation where I stuck to the limit and he hasn't and its upsetting. Its like not playing fair and makes you feel bad.

Stick to the limit for the main gift. If you want to do something extra, do something really sweet that dosen't cost too much money. If your handy make her something, or cook her a really romantic candlelight dinner, or take her car and detail it. You could even take a photo of the two of you and have it matted and framed.

The value of a gift is never monetary, its the thought and effort that goes into selecting it just for her.

Good luck!

When the wife and I set limits, it is amazing the deals I find! If you know what I mean ...

As for the diamond ring, no, no, no, not on Christmas eve - too expected. Not the week before - shoots the anticipation. The night AFTER Christmas ... she is all bummed and disappointed, and then you give her what she had been hoping for, but thought she would not get for another year. Now you are the goat turned hero!
