Some one GAVE me a 15' starcraft with an 85 hp Force on it!!!
I've got 3 issues to solve here mighty outboard gurus. (your help is realllly appreciated)
1.
It wouldn't start after Wintering so I shot some auto carb cleaner in the carbs and left it for a long time then it ran fine.
I've taken it out for about 5 hours since but it's running ruffer now. sometimes it kind off "misses" and forces the motor really hard to turn the steering wheel in my hands. it's quite a voilent jerk.
what the heck is that?? it also sounds like it wants to stall at lower revs.. also I pinned it last time it went out and it took like 10 min's until it went from 3500 rpm and then finally shot up to 4400. and off it went...:% yikes, any clues as to what might be my isse here folks?

2.
how do I find out what year it is... I've looked all over the motor and see a few stamps on it but nothing that indicates year (which of these codes will indicate the year??)

3.
I've got oil leaking from out of my spark plugs after running. I'm mixing 50:1 and there's a trail of oil coming out of my plugs:'(.... what is that?

this forum is fantastic!!!
thank you to all in advance for responses.

Re: Gift from the gods!!

Test all the cylinders for spark and compression. The oil you are seeing from one of the cylinders sounds like that cylinder is not firing. Your jump in RPM could be a cylinder all of the sudden kicking in. The violent jump could be a busted gear in the lower unit, a bad clutch or a spun prop however it could also be related to the oil coming out the cylinder. Get the compression and spark test done first and then report back. Depending on the year of your motor it may only have a number like 858F6C or OC853F8B.

In addition to what is above, I would also rebuild the carbs, as that violent jump may be a "lean sneeze."

The only place that the model or serial number appeared on that motor was on an id sticker on the side of the transom bracket, OR, on a plate under the bottom carb.

If you can look at the coils and cd modules, what color are they? blue, or black?
