Last July I purchased an '88 Trophy 2160. I hooked it to muffs, and it fired right away. After burning off the previous winterizations fogging I let it idle and come up to temp. Everything was fine. I worked on it last fall and all this spring. Took it to Lake Michigan for its first voyage, from July 1-10. It starts beautifully. Idles good. When I get it out of the harbor and give it throttle it comes up good to about 12 mph and then just kind of bogs at that point. The first time it took about 6-7 minutes then it gradually climbed up to 30 mph. Definitely no hole shot, lol. Once it was up that speed it was about 3/4-7/8 throttle. At that point if I put the throttle down, you could physically hear and feel the motor bog. If I eased the throttle back some the rpms come up a little. This motor idles great and trolls spectacular. Doesn't seem like it would be a plug/wire issue?
Here is what I know, and what I did.
1) Boat is a one owner with 370 original hours on it.
2) All work was done and documented at a marina.
3) Gas was 3 years old and stablized.
4) After getting back to dock after the first outing I changed the water/fuel seperator, and checked the little fuel filter by the carb it was fine.
5) Taking it back out on the water, I pulled the spark arrestor and checked the choke while under power, wide open. Choke is not sticking.
6) I have an 80 gallon tank which had 60 in it. I burned that down to 1/4 tank and have since added 70 gallons (10 at a time) while burning it down a little lower each time, and have added 3 cans of seafoam. 50 gallons was pure 91 octane, and 20 gallons was 10% Ethanol 91 Octane. Hoping the seafoam might clean the jets, and the Ethanol might eat up any water in there. As the week went on the motor would come up to speed better (faster) but is still boggy on top end and on and off through out the coming up to speed process.
7) I pulled the dist cap to check points, and discovered it had been upgraded to elctronic ignition. No points to deal with!
8) I am thinking of trying to get a fuel pressure gauge and check the fuel pressure coming out of the pump.
9) Maybe should check plugs and wires....but it starts and trolls so perfect...that doesn't seem to fit the bill.
10) Maybe I should try to clean out the spark arrestor?
Any other thoughts on what could be going on here?
Thanks,
Les
