Hi,

After the carb and various linkages are removed, how do you get the powerhead off (powerhead is being replaced)?

1963 Evinrude Fastwin 18HP, model 18302.

You then simply remove the various screws from underneath. If memory serves, 5 main, plus

May need to rock it to break the seal from the compound. That model will have 2 base gaskets, with a baffle plate between them. They are usually junk and need to be replaced.

Did you damage the powerhead?

I'm helping someone remove his. The problem is accessing the area from underneath because the swivel bracket blocks access.

Thanks, but how do you access the underside of the lower cowl without removing the exhaust housing and/or steering bracket etc.?

The bolt heads are all on the outside of the exhaust housing and fairly easy to get at.

+1. They're on the exposed and accessible on the underside of the lower cowl. They'll come right off with the correct sized socket.

I know the one you are talking about, the forward-most one (far right in the picture). You CAN get up in there with a proper socket or screwdriver, depending on bolt head type. Use a 1/4" drive thin socket and extension. However, some motors use a #3 Phillips head bolt, self explanatory.

+1. The forward most bolt was a little tricky to get to, but I was also able to get to it with some fiddling. Just be patient and use some penetrating oil as need. Some of the bolt head may pretty corroded after all these years.
