Gel Coat vs. Metallic Flake Gel Coat

I got my '91 bayliner 2050 capri list spring, the guy I got it from had it painted but no gel coat so it got a couple of scratches over last summer. I plan on doing some touch up paint on the small scratches and a little filler on the bow damage (tried to push the dock, the dock won!) But I need to put a gel coat on it to protect the paint. I have never done gel coats before but I cant immagine it being much different than painting.

So here is the question, there is a lot of debate online as to whats better, gel only or gel w/metallic flake addative. Some say the coat with the metallic flake fades and cracks faster and cant be repaired, however others say the additive doesnt hurt at all. So whats the deal, does the flake make the coat die faster? They also say it adds sooo much weight but from what I'm finding its like 16oz per gallon, doesnt seem like much to me! Also, how much will I need... boat is 20-21', deep V with low sides, if it worked right I included a picture in the post.

Re: Gel Coat vs. Metallic Flake Gel Coat

I think you may be confusing terms. Gelcoat is the first layer sprayed in to the mold when a fiberglass hull is made. When the boat is made the gelcoat is the outer finished skin of the boat. It is a completely different animal that paint. You would not use gelcoat to cover paint. It is a difficult process to apply gelcoat to refinish a boat. This due to the nature of gelcoat. It is meant to be sprayed in a mold, not applied like paint. It is possible to do, but very labor intensive to get right.
Most folks with damaged gelcoat on older boats generally apply paint to restore the finish. If your boat is painted you can restore the finish by using conventional techniques for paint.
To restore the gelcoat you would need to remove the paint and restore the gelcoat under it.
Unless you have experience spraying and working with gelcoat, I recommend you go with paint. However there are a few contributers here that can advise you on working with gelcoat if you decided to go that way.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,....

You'd better do a few more long days of Readin' in this forum,....
You're extremely confused on how this stuff works....

Gelcoat is NEVER shot over top of paint....
And, Yes, metal flake shortens the life of the gelcoat, by about 90%....

You need to find out what paint the PO put on there and try to stick with that system..

Agreed that Gel cannot be applied over paint.

Although blending gel is much easier once you went to paint you have to stay with paint ( unless all the paint is removed ).

Forget about Flake in gel..unless your an experianced flake applicator..
