Hi all my first post here I have a 2002 Four winns horizon with a 4.3 Volvo Penta Engine and drive. I had some damage last year to the keel and side of the boat. I Temporarily patched it with some gel coat repair last year but it started to leak through and I was concerned that it could damage the fiberglass. I found a guy advertising his services and took the boat to him he looked at it and said thats not bad all it needs is a little gel coat and that he could fix it like new. Saying that I wouldnt be able to tell so I was very happy to hear this as Im a pefectionist regarding my stuff. I saw his prep work and wow it looked fantastic so I thought that once he puts on the gel coat it will look like new.. Well I paid him more of what we agreed upon and he told me that he would be done within a week or so and that he would put my boat in his back yard so that I could pick it up whenever. When I went to pick the boat up I looked the repair and wow I could see a discoloration or kinda brown streak over the repair, which by the way @ 1st was only about 6" long and now is about 4'. I called him and asked what happened and he started to give me excuses about how the tints, didnt work or turn out and that he couldnt guarentee the color match etc etc. But he did say that he will try to redo it. I talked to him this week and now again hes saying that he cant gaurentee that it will match? I m starting to think that he talked a good talk to me so as to get the job I dunno Im looking for some opinions of how to proceed should I get him to re do it or just live with it??? Thanks

Not defending the guy, but, it is very difficult to color match gelcoat he should not have said that he could in the first place. Even at the factory when we saved gel from the same batch as the boat was built it often didn't match perfectly when a repair was needed.

Re: Gel coat repair

Based on the pics, and the location, Only the fish will know, and in a couple of outings I'm not sure anyone will be able to tell the difference. I'd go boating and fugitaboutit!!!!!!
