I have some deep scratches and chips on the bow of my boat, looks like preveious owner needed to replace bow stop but instead kept nocking the bow
against the metal channel.I replaced the bow stop
but would like to repair the scratches. What would be the best way to fill in these places, and what kind of paint can i use to touch up these areas?

If they are not that big or deep, then you can just get some gel coat of the correct color and repair it. Check out Spectrum Colors for matching gel coat.

Thats not very deep, gel coat will work very well on a repair like that. Bondo will work, but there are better things to use, you won't need anything but gel coat though. Can you see the dark color of the fiberglass in some of the scratches, or is just in the gel coat (color coat)?

Marine supply stores and some auto parts stores carry it, but check with Specrtum Colors on line. They have many boat colors already matched so you won't need to try and tint it yourself. Don't expect it to be a perfect match though. Even large gouges like these can be done with just gel coat.

Do you have a web site for spectrum colors?tryed a google search couldnt find what i was looking for.One more ? Is gel coat normaly clear and you add pigment to it to get the color? What im trying to ask is can you get it in clear, fill in the scratches, then touch up with paint. The reason i ask is i need about 3 diffrent colors.

You can get a half pint of white gelcoat for around $20,color agent(tube) for around $5 at any boaters supply. If you try to match your color, mix the color agent a little at a time, use a very little, less then a 1/4 drop.Get the picture? And don't add it to the can.Pour a small amount in a contaner, but before doing that, mix the gelcoat that is in the can. After that mix up,DON'T add any hardner yet, take a stick, dab a dot next to the area of repair, adjust your color agent as needed.Once you match, then add your hardner. Those dabs that you put can be clean with a little of acetone on a rag.

Depending on the color you want to match, you either start with a white tint base or a semi clear base, whites and off whites use the white tint base, dark colors use the clear. I will get the # for you.

Here are two places to get small amounts of gel coat that have been color matched to your boat. They may not have every boat color matched, but they have been doing this for a long time, so there is good chance they do have the one(s) you need.

GCP 206-781-1162
Spectrum 253-735-1830
