gears grinding

Just replaced my water pump, put lower unit back on.I started the motor and when I put in foward or reverse the gears grinded hard. I know they are supposed to grind a little. Could it be the position of the shift shaft on the L/?U?

Shift Briskly (as preffered) and grinding shouldn't occur.

Provided you have forward and reverse, the splines are aligned.
