Gears click/grind

My gears click/grind when I put it in forward or reverse. Is this normal? I was told to shift very slowly, so that's what I do. Once in gear, it seems fine.
Thanks.

I was told to shift very slowly,

Worst possible thing to do on any marine drive or transmission.

Put it in gear briskly, but you don't have to break any speed shifting records.
Also make sure your idle rpm is in the 650 to 750 rpm range. NO higher.

There is going to be some noise when you put it in gear- moving parts hook up to non moving parts until it pops into gear which only takes a second if you shift like Don S suggested.

Right on. Thanks. I thought this didn't seem right. If you shift slow enough, it'll just sit there and grind till the teeth are gone.
That old Ford rumbles along at about 560 in idle (spec is 550-600), so at least I have that part right.
