Gearcase similarities...

Hi,

I have a 3-cyl. Evinrude 35 HP (1998 or 1999) with a broken gearbox/lower end. New gearboxes seem to be VERY expensive and it's kind of difficult to find used ones. The other day I was looking thru a parts catalogue and I found that most/all parts (gears, shafts, seals, bearings, etc.)- depending on the year- for older 20/25/30 HP 2-cyl. models are identical with the 3-cyl. model, i.e. have the same part numbers. As a consequence, It seems that it is quite easy to find used interior parts for the gearbox, but how about the gearcase itself (I mean just the aluminium case excluding everything else)? Are the cases of 35 HP 3-cyl. models interchangeable with the older 20/25/30 HP 2-cyl. models although they have different part numbers. Any ideas? I would appreciate any information. Thanks in advance!

Pasi/Finland

Look at the bolt patterns where the lower unit bolts up to the midsection Pasi. The patterns changed starting in 94' I think. So you may be stuck with getting a housing for your model. The innards may be the same though from what I can see.

Re: Gearcase similarities...

Thanks OBJ!

OK, I'll check the bolt patterns and I'll try to find a similar housing, since it seems that the broken case can not be fixed by welding. It is surprisng how large damage a small piece of a broken clutch dog can do in the gearbox... someone claimed that the premature lower unit damages are common for 35 HP 3-cyl. models, I doubt. Any opinions?

Pasi
