Gearbox removal ideas

I have a NS18C2 (2 stroke 18HP) that had water in the oil when I got it. I've got the gearcase partially loose, but can't get it the rest of the way off. It seems the driveshaft is stuck in the crankshaft.

I've thought to try turning the motor upside down and spraying ScrewLoose (penetrating oil) onto the shaft, and let it drip towards the power head.

Also to try and wedge the cases apart with the engine running to heat the crank end.

I've see the idea to loosen the power head bolts and try prying at the other end. Any tricks that have worked out, or things to avoid? Glad for any ideas.

In looking at the parts diagram for your outboard, it looks like the drive shaft should just slip out of the power head. You might try friendly persuasion with a rubber mallet or a wedge. Be gentle so you don't break the housing.

Doing any disassembly with the engine running -

I have to ask - have you detached the shift rod? (it looks like yours attaches with pin at top of rod, as well as a connector just below power head)

It would be great if you didn't have to remove or loosen the power head.

Assuming you have the shifter disconnected...

Yes, if the LU has not been off in a long time, the splines can get stuck. Good idea to apply grease to the splines when reassembling, but don't get grease on the end of the shaft, or you may have trouble getting it to seat all the way into the crank at reassembly time.

Wedges work wonders, but require patience, possibly a day. Drive the wedges in a little more each hour or so. You can also hang the motor upside-down, a half inch off the deck, and allow the weight of the motor to pull on the splines.

Luckily for me, LU first removal from my 2006 18 E2 came down instantly, you must always apply some grease at shaft's upper splines to avoid unwanted  tedious problems.
