Have a 1988 Bayliner with a 3L OMC engine which is now built into MerCruiser and that the drive is switched to Alpha One Gen 2 (control box and all wires are new) I have used the boat ,but it is difficult to get out of gear to the free (from the reverse works well with some speed on the lever) The switch that make sure that speed is not too high when shifting gear I had to disconnect because the engine almost stops(engine running rough only in gear) if it is connected..Is it someone that has any advice on what that could be wrong?

First, get your engine issues straightened out, you might be idleing high. That would put extra pressure on the gears to try and shift.

No expert, but I'd suspect that's the root of your shifting issues. If the motor's turning too fast, it affects the ease of shifting and will eventually damage your outdrive. You need to correct your idling problem and set the motor to proper idling rpm.

The shift interrupt switch is there to take the pressure off the drive so it can shift, that is due to the nature of the Mercruiser drive internals. It may not be adjusted correctly, or maybe you are moving the lever too slow?

Maclin, the OP disconnected the interrupt switch because the motor stalls at idle speed.

I understood the problem to be the engine would die before it could get into gear or out of gear as the switch came into play when the lever was moved. In any case with that drive it will not get out of gear if the engine is not interrupted, especially in the water with load on it. If the switch makes the engine run rough all the time even in neutral then it is not wired into the ignition coil circuit correctly I'm thinkin'.

The engine runs fine at idle but when the switch is connected to the engine reacts so bad when you give gass.it does not stop but sounds as if it will suffocate

How old is the lower shift cable out to the drive?

If you are still using the OMC ignition that may be your problem. I am not sure, but I believe the OMC had their shift interrupt set up differently than Mercruiser. Not sure how much of the OMC stuff you used, but you do need a properly wired and functional shift interrupt switch in order to get out of gear on a Mercruiser.
