hello, i have a late '70s 6hp evinrude (twin cylinder) worked fine since i got it about 6yrs ago, apart from last rear the gear shifter would go loose n floppy and would not shift out of whatever gear it was last in, Fwd Rev or Neut. was a problem i intended to sort over the winter but only just got round to looking at n it seems fine. any ideas what the problem could be?? thanks.

Re: gear shift

There are several pieces (screws washers spring and lever) on the other end of the shifter. Look at that inside the cowl and look down in the lower cowl to see if you see any of those that have came loose. If it is not that, your shift rod is two pieces and connected in the middle, in the lower unit. That connection may have come loose. Go to shop2evinrude and look up your model. I looked up 1978 #6804B then look at exhaust housing print. Then look at gearcase print.
