Gear Shift Problem

I replaced the water pump on my 2003 Mercury 115 hp outboard. After reinstalling the foot, it would not go into neutral and the prop clicks when moving clockwise and locks in counter clockwise direction. Shifting gears has no effect it still clicks when spun clockwise and locks in counterclockwise. Any help with this will be appreciated.

Your gearcase is in forward. Drop the gearcase, turn the shifter CCW until it clicks into neutral and set the control to neutral. Now reinstall the gearcase. You will want to grease the driveshaft and shiftshaft splines, befor installation. You will need to turn the flywheel by hand to synch the splines on the drivesahft with those on the crankshaft. Use a needlenose plier to mate the upper and lower shift shafts.
