Re: gear ratio on 1997 johnson 150

definately find out what the recommended WOT rpms are and match your prop accordingly. The motors are designed to operate in that range, and will last longer

For my (older) outboard, 5100 is good rpms, but 5100 for yours might be lugging as mentioned above. I guess I failed to take that into consideration during my previous posts

I don't know any outboard that 5100RPM is "Good" for..

EDIT: I take that back...I believe some of the Force engines were either 5000 or 5100 max.

Re: gear ratio on 1997 johnson 150

I show about 14.5% slip...
If you can use all of the trim, we need to raise the engine one hole and test.
I would also give some serious thought to a bit higher quality SS prop.
I have run quite a few MWC props, and the last SS I ran showed higher slip than the Raker I'm running at this point.
Another thing that may happen is if we run a higher Rake prop, it may lose some drag due to the lifting ability (the MWC prop doesn't have enough lift)and it may surprise you what you gain in RPM and speed.
Just to prove a different blade design doesn't always follow the rules, I went from a polished MWC 19 pitch to a OMC Raker in a 20 pitch...I raised one more hole and gained about 250 RPM and almost 6 MPH in speed....don't see many gaining RPM by going up in pitch, but if the prop currently being used doesn't fit the application or need, the right prop can almost make a new boat out of your rig.

Put a 225 etec on that baby that will cure your need for speed! Your going to fry your motor with a 24 pitch.. You have a heavy boat there get ya a 20 pitch raker, your engine will love it....

Re: gear ratio on 1997 johnson 150

I'm running 58 mph @ 5800 rpms 55mph with a full tank of gas and a fishing buddy
. My boat is only a 18.5 foot fish-ski, I could get alot more speed out of mine if I went to a higher pitched prop but want to keep my rpms at 5800. Your boat is bigger than mine. It is probably rated for a max of 200 or 225 motor right. There are alot of marine mechanics here who fix these things every day who could explain what happens to a motor when it is lugging better than me. I just have been told by my mechanic and the ones here what lugging a motor does to your motor, I've already had to rebuild mine once and it put me out for a year and 3800 bucks so I'm playing it safe.. your not going very fast when your pistons are on your shelf.. Walleye said it that some props dont follow the rules. I think that you cant beat a raker. I'll bet with a raker you'll pick up some speed.
