Hello I was wondering if someone could help me figure out a problem I am having. I have a 1964 28 hp Evenrude which seems to jump out of gear periodically while in the water. I makes the motor jump like i am hitting something with the prop. I did at one time take out the screw to the clutch dog when I was changing the gear oil instead of the drain plug for it. Is it possible I did not get it in right? will it still shift if I put it back and not inserted it right? Plz help thanks.

If it shifted correctly after you put the screw back in, you're ok. Sounds like the clutch dog is worn down. You'll need to take the lower unit off and take the gear housing apart. The clutch dog can be flipped over if it hasn't been before. You might consider replacing the prop shaft seal, drive shaft seal and the shift rod seal while you're at it. Of course, there's the impeller that could/should be changed as well. Not expensive and it might save doing this job all over again.

Thank you for the input. I did recently change the impeller though. I recently bought a so called 33 hp Evenrude turned out it was a 28 so I am using parts off it. There was nothing wrong with the lower unit on that one. But I do not know if the lower unit is the same with the 28 can it still work to swap?

If it was the same year there should be no problem.
