Gear oil in 1970 johnson 9.5

While removing the lower unit, I dumped out some of the gear oil. I noticed a screw on the side for oil filling. Does the motor have to be on its side to fill the oil, or can it be on the boat? Thanks!!

It's best to leave the motor in the vertical position and pump the oil in the lower screw until it come out of the upper screw (looks just like the same screw as the lower one). Then replace the upper screw....quickly unscrew the pump and replace the lower screw. Make sure that you replace the nylon washer behind both screws. The pump kit can usually be bought at the same places as the oil.

Salt..you shouldn'T have lost oil just removing the lower unit...is there something else in need of fixin'?

without thinking after I removed the water pump and impeller, I inverted the lower unit to see if the screen was clogged. Only a little bit drained out, but I decided to let the rest drain into a bucket and replace it with new oil. I would estimate only about 1/2 cup of oil came out. I've never attempted outboard repair, so mostly what I do is by trial and error. Right now, mostly error!

Just don't take out the phillips head screw on the side of the gearcase. That isn't a drain screw.
