i have a 1987 johnson 9.9 outboard motor. i've used it for quite sometime now and it is still working perfectly.however lately i've noticed drops of oil coming out from the propeller shaft, it smells like gear oil. where does this oil come from? which parts of the engine contain gear oil? and how do i replenish it for the mean time that I am waiting for the oil seal i ordered to replaced the worn out one.(by the way the leak is very minimal yet)

Re: gear oil for '87 johnson 9.9

Hey Gopay,Your engines lower unit is its gearcase. The gearcase transfers the engines vertical rotating shaft to a horizontal rotation prop shaft by means of gears. The lower unit gear oil is within its housing and serves to lubricate the driveshaft pinion ,forward and reverse gears, and shifting components. The seal you ordered is the propshaft seal which which serves to prevent water from coming in and oil from getting out.I suggest that you order yourself a repair manual for your engine which will touch on all of your engines components, their function ,and assist you in any repairs that youperform.
