Gear Lube Seal Problems

Forward. Neutral Forward or reg forward?

Wonder if he means, the forward you're in when you're not in forward? (maybe 'throttle only' forward???) :noidea:

Zul.... A boat has 2 gears, Forward and reverse. When it's not in forward or reverse, it's in neutral. Neutral is not a gear, per sa, it's 'no gear'... Once a gear is selected, then throttle is applied, from idle to full throttle. Lastly, there is a selection on the control box that allows the engine speed to be raised without a gear being selected, this is the 'Throttle only' position... But the drive remains in 'no gear', neutral.

To remove the drive, FIRST select forward gear.... So without pushing/pulling the 'Throttle only' button/knob/lever, push the control lever forward. It is now in forward gear and you will be able to remove the drive, given it is straight and in the fully DOWN position. Remove the anchor points at the rear end of the trim rams, remove 6 nuts from the bell housing studs and pull the drive straight back.... It takes longer to write how to do it than it takes to do it....

There is Forward and then there is Neutral Forward.

1. What is 'neutral forward'?

We are going w forward and twisting the prop shaft counterclockwise to ensure that we are getting those bits lined up best possible.

I have watched all of the achris videos. Many times.

Seems while in forward, we can see that it is 'lined up' in the middle of the outdrive (the L bracket in the slot). So that looks good.

The plastic and metal bracket inside the outdrive seems to be hanging up, these parts are on the starboard side of the drive. I believe these parts are hanging up. Stuck. Push the drive back in, neutral and back to Forward. Still stuck. We can get about an inch.

2. I don't know any 'plastic and metal bracket inside the outdrive'.... going to need photos, or a proper description. Please use the merc parts manual to identify these parts. Your drive -> http://www.mercruiserparts.com/alpha-one-gen-ii-1998-and-up-0l10004

We have the trailer axle jacked up about three inches so that we are level. The drive is all the way down.

AllDodge - Wood block helped. Still not off yet. What about placing a few jacks under the axel so I can get a straight pull?

my guess is this is describing the shift slide on the STBD side of the bell housing and this will not hang up on anything in the drive

its possible the gimble bearing is corroded onto the splined shaft and binding up when trying to remove the drive, i have seen this more than once. i wonder how long its been since the last drive removal

Comes out of the bell housing, starboard side. Connects into the upper unit where the orange pencil is in the photo.

So, yes, me thinks dubs got it -- shift slide. So the shift slide will not hang me up or break?

Drive was installed about 10 months ago, greased up really well.

If it's properly in forward gear the shift slide will not hang up on anything. If you've watched my video on drive removal, you'll see that one I start pulling the drive back, it comes straight out. I'm supporting it as it comes out so it doesn't drop onto the slide, but the slide won't stop it.

After much effort, I have removed the outdrive, successfully. It is currently holding 7 psi for 48 hours and counting. So excited. Angels are singing. It looks like all of the parts including the shift slide are not damaged. So, I've got a new bell housing gasket and o-rings on order including a set of brand new fiber washers for the plug (NOT a fan of the yellow ones).

Next I will wipe everything down, re-grease, watch more achris videos on re-installing the drive and put new gear lube back in.

Well, today is install day and I do not have an alignment tool. I've called all around and no luck.

SO -- Is it OK to re-install the drive without the alignment tool? My mechanic is out of town. He says since the motor and gimbel weren't changed, should be OK.
