Gear lube reservoir

Wondering, where does the gear lube in the engine bay reservoir feed to exactly, how is it different from the lube in the lower unit that I change every year, I mean I know it's the same lube, just what parts does it lube?

It's not any different really. It is move a visual reference on how the level of lube in lower is. It also has a one way valve that would release any air bubbles in lower that may have occurred during filling when it heats up. Some folks set an alarm with the reservoir that alerts them if the level is getting too low, which could indicate an issue with lower unit leaking. Helps keep lower under pressure and keep water out. Along with changing the lowers gear lube, every 2-3 years you should drain, clean, and replace the lube in the reservoir.

The hose goes down to transom, thru transom, then a hose by bellows feeds it to bellhousing and into the drive. There is an alarm that will sound if it gets low in the reservoir. Same alarm that goes off when you start and for low oil pressure and over temp...

Easy way to check when u use the boat if the level is dropping

When I winterize I drain the lube completely out and fill until the level shows in the reservoir, then u can top it off by the reservoir. In the spring after first run some air works its way up to res and level will drop a hair then it is good for the year.

Thanks for the info, kinda thought they were connected but I wasn't sure.

Watched a video of a guy changing the oil in the lower unit, Alpha One, removed vent plug, removed drain plug, then when drained, pumped new oil in drain hole till comes out vent plug. wondering why can't the oil be put in at the vent hole till full?

Because if you do it this way it will trap air in the lower and eat up the bearings and gears in the lower before the air makes its way to the top.. Always fill from the lower .

As mentioned need to fill from bottom of drive up with a pump to get all the air out of the gear case. You may have watched an older gen one video with out the lube reservoir. I drain completely take cap off reservoir, when some drains take out upper vent plug. Fill from bottom until it comes out upper vent plug, put upper plug back in, keep pumping from bottom until lube starts to fill the reservoir, top or reservoir from qt bottle... done
